ABC: Staffing still a challenge for contractors, 363K job openings
As of July 31, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, the construction industry had 363,000 job openings. The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS), which identifies positions for which an employer is actively recruiting, indicated that the number of open jobs fell by 23,000 from June 2023 but increased by 10,000 from July 31, 2022.

Infrastructure backlog jumps 24%, pushing demand to 'upper end of historic levels'
Backlog fell on a monthly basis for companies with revenues of less than $100 million a year. That mirrors the slight downturn in monthly numbers from July to August as overall industry backlog, including private development, dipped 1.1% lower. But it surged more than 30% for the biggest contractors — those with sales of $100 million or more — that are most likely to bid on billion-dollar, large-scale infrastructure projects.
